A few months ago I ran a 5K with my mom. I really didn't train for it and my workouts had been an off and on kind of thing. But, I pushed myself through it, I didn't back out-despite being unprepared and I ran the whole thing! I didn't stop once to walk! I was so happy!!!! And then the next day I was SO SORE!
Despite being sore I felt so accomplished! I never thought myself as a runner, to be completely honest I really hate running! I was the manager of the cross country team in high-school, because my older brother ran cross-country and I had no friends haha! I would see the team running miles and miles everyday, then doing miles of squats and hundreds of abs and I thought anything like that would kill me! In high school I was active though, 3 years of softball, did basketball, volleyball and track(shot-put and discus-I started out in sprints but that was too much work!) Still I always wished I was able to do what both my brothers could, they were both runners!
High school was about 8 years ago now and it took all that time to even attempt a 5K! Before that I have only ever run 2 miles at a time ONCE! Otherwise I never went over a mile! But, despite my lack of preparation I want more! Now that I know my body is capable of running a 5K I want to do another!
I was telling a friend about what I had done, (she runs marathons and half-marathons all the time) and she told me, "You know they say that if you can run a 5K you can run a 10K." I laughed at her and said that would never happen... That was until I found a book by Ian MacNeill called The Beginning Runner's Handbook The Proven 13-week Walk/Run Program.
Found here: http://www.amazon.com/The-Beginning-Runners-Handbook-Walk-Run/dp/1553650875/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1352496801&sr=8-1&keywords=the+beginning+runner%27s+handbook+the+proven+13-week+walk+run+program
I bought the book which has you work a 13 week interval program so you build up to running that far-I could do this! The first week it has you only running for 1 minute at a time-right up my alley! So I told my girlfriend about the book and she said I had to pick a race to run for when I finished the program, like no pressure! But I did!
On March 10th I'll be running a 10K at Knott's Berry Farm! I've signed up and paid for it, even requested the work days off! I have no excuses and that was before I got to my second day of training! (which was today by the way lol). So you only run 3 days a week, to give your body time to adapt to the strain you are putting on it and to help build up your endurance. These first two days of training I only went 3.6 miles about each time! Took about 40 minutes for warm-up, my intervals and then the cool-down.
Their are more reasons than just to see if I can run that far. I've been struggling to lose weight. I've hit a plateau, unable to keep these last 20 pounds off! I get down to only having 10 or so to go and then it comes right back. But, I have been very relaxed on my workouts the weather is starting to change and I feel like I want to hibernate! haha so this running program makes me stick to exercise and because when you run your food choices really effect your energy levels I really hope I get better at point healthy things in my mouth!
I will keep you posted on my progress!
So far in Week 1: days 1 and 2 complete! One more to go!
